ABC READ was founded to address the high levels of illiteracy within the Black community in ways that honor and reflect our lived experiences and culture.
Research has consistently shown that one reason Black children may develop a disinterest in reading is the lack of representation in their book choices, particularly within schools.
Another major contributing factor is limited access to books in the home. In fact, 61% of low-income families do not have books in their homes, and many children are not regularly exposed to adults reading around them.
